New Year’s Resolutions for the Home

Happy New Year! With 2016 just around the corner, we thought we would share some of our New Year’s resolutions for around the home. We hope that you use these resolutions to better yourself and your home in the coming year—and that you’re inspired to make some of your own resolutions, too!

Start a more effective cleaning routine

We know that cleaning (and how to do it effectively) can be a big gray area for many homeowners. This year, why not make it a priority to refocus your cleaning efforts and get tasks done in a faster, more effective way? It all starts by rethinking your cleaning routine.

Examine what you’re currently doing and think of ways it could be changed for the better. Are you letting small messes pile up until a big cleaning day on the weekends (which can leave you feeling burnt out)? Do you focus too much (or maybe too little) on certain spots of your home?

One easy cleaning routine you can try in 2016 is to divide your home into zones and clean a little bit every day… rather than trying to tackle it all at once. This small change can have a big impact on the overall feel of your home, not to mention your happiness and wellbeing!

Appreciate what you have

Household chores, yard work and other tasks related to homeownership may not be the most exciting—however, learn to appreciate them nonetheless! You only have so many responsibilities because you own a home, and that’s something to be grateful for.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

If your new organization method just doesn’t work out by the time the New Year rolls around, don’t worry—you can just try something else! This year, make an effort to focus on the big picture over the smaller, less important details.

Get ahead of your finances

This year, try to stay ahead of your mortgage by setting aside extra cash when you can and making extra payments. You’d be surprised how much of a relief this small act can provide for and your family.

Go green

To save money and improve the “greenness” of your home in 2016, make the switch to energy efficient appliances if you haven’t already. You may also consider recycling or finding green ways to lower your utility bill.

Start a garden

So many of our New Year’s resolutions have to do with being healthy and fit—and that’s important for our homes, too! To make your home “healthy” too, consider planting a garden in 2016. Not only will this provide you and your family with an attractive backyard landscape and yummy food to eat… it can serve as a fun bonding activity for you and your loved ones!

Renovate a room

Is there a room in your home you just don’t know what to do with? This year, take the plunge and renovate it! Whether that means converting your spare space into a home theater or craft room, decide what you’ll use the space for and get started.

Tackle your dream project

If you’ve been sitting on a project waiting for the “right time” to roll around, now is the time to finally do it! In 2016, boldly tackle your room addition, art studio project or other big task—in a few months, you’ll be glad you did.
