Feeling stuck when it comes to home design? You can find inspiration in paint swatches, design catalogs, home improvement shows… and, perhaps surprisingly, your very own closet!
Your closet is a collection of things that you’ve liked, picked out, and worn time and time again—making it an insightful (but often overlooked) source of inspiration for the kind of space you want to live in. In today’s blog, we’ll be sharing a few ways to translate your clothes and closet style to your home’s overall design.
Take note of color
Before you investigate any further into your closet, take note of one of the simplest signs available—the color! Many times, you will find that the colors you like to wear are the same kinds of colors you like to surround yourself with. If you find lots of bright pops of color in your closet, for example, you may just be happiest in a home that’s equally filled with vivid walls and decor. If, on the other hand, your closet is packed with rich, earthy shades, you may be most comfortable in a space that’s similarly grounded.
Observe the design of your closet itself
Once you’ve spotted any colors that may stand out, take a look at the design of the closet itself. Is it neat and utilitarian, with shelves, hangers and clothes and not much else? Or are there touches of home scattered throughout—perfume or cologne, for example, or even a photo frame or two? The answer may say a lot about your design style, suggesting whether you’d be happiest in a clean, minimalist space or one that’s filled to the brim with handmade touches.
Turn crisp, classic outfits into traditional charm…
Now, take note of the style of the clothes themselves. If you find lots of classic attire—crisp, clean, and adorned in conventional patterns like dots or stripes—you can translate that look to your home with a traditional design mindset. Neutral colors and traditional textures can serve as the starting point for decorative adventures—so even if you have an eye for whimsical touches, you can include them against a backdrop that’s as versatile as your wardrobe.
…or unique looks into eclectic decor choices
Your closet may be a little less conventional, of course, and a little more “out there” when it comes to clothing choices. Bring that individual flair to your home by picking out one-of-a-kind accents and eclectic design schemes that blend together multiple styles, colors, or even decades in one space.
With these ideas and a closet full of your favorite clothes, you’re already halfway to a home design concept you love!
