Your big, spacious home is your one-way ticket to relaxation and a comfortable lifestyle. You love that it can accommodate your needs while still maintaining the lux feel that you fell in love with. But if you’re the owner of a large home, you know that all that extra square footage requires lots of cleaning. How do you keep your home looking perfect while still making time for work, family and other commitments? Today, we’re looking at a few tips that should make caring for your large home a bit easier.
Avoid big “cleaning days” at the end of the week.
If you live in a big house, you may have grown used to weekly cleaning days—often Saturdays or Sundays devoted to dusting, mopping, and tidying up from morning until the afternoon. While you might get everything done on these days, you probably don’t love dedicating huge chunks of time to these tasks. Clean throughout the week instead of on one dedicated day; you’ll be less overwhelmed by the tasks at hand and free up time to relax and spend more time on the things that matter to you.
Divide cleaning into zones or jobs.
Part of a cleaning a little every day means dividing a big job into smaller ones. You may choose to do this by splitting your cleaning into specific zones (such as your family room, eating area, bedrooms, etc.) or tasks (like dusting, mopping or glass cleaning). Find the method that works for you! By dividing up tasks to be done, you will be able to know exactly what needs to be done each day.
Don’t be afraid to enlist outside help! There’s no shame in hiring a housekeeping service to keep your home looking great if you don’t have the time or resources to do it yourself. You can find services for daily, weekly or monthly cleanings… whichever you prefer. You may be surprised that these services don’t always cost a fortune, either!
Also be sure to ask for help from the fellow residents of your home—your family, that is! Leave personal jobs like bedroom upkeep to kids to help keep these spaces tidy and instill in them a sense of responsibility.
Clean as you go.
Taking care of small “tidying up” tasks throughout your daily routine is a great idea for any homeowner, but especially for those who have lots of space to keep clean. The key idea here is to complete small tasks without actually changing your day to day activities—for example, as you head from the living room to the kitchen, pick up any dishes that need to be placed in the sink. If you’re waiting for a pot of water to boil, take that time to wipe your counters. These small tasks don’t take extra time out of your day, but they definitely add up to a cleaner home.
Decluttering in your spacious home may seem counterintuitive—after all, if your home is large in size shouldn’t you be able to have more “stuff?” While you may enjoy having extra furniture to accommodate your family and friends, avoid taking up space with items you don’t absolutely need (such as extra décor or furniture in infrequently used guest rooms). This can make cleaning these areas a much easier tasks, since there will be less unused furniture to dust and keep clean.
