It’s every homeowner’s dream to have a lush, expansive backyard or lawn. And for good reason! Having a large enough space can allow you and your family to enjoy time together outdoors, host neighborhood get-togethers, and stay active while having fun. But if you find that you have lots of green space on your hands—and aren’t quite sure what to do with it all—you may want to consider adding a new element to your space. Today, we will be looking at a few ways you can accomplish that.
The first step in reconsidering your backyard is to determine what you use the space for now, and what you hope to use it for in the future. If impromptu games of touch football are high on your family’s “fun” list, for example, then you wouldn’t necessarily want to convert too much space into a patio or entertaining space. And on the other hand, if you love having guests over and rarely use the backyard for recreation, having lots of green space may not be a “must” for you.
Let’s look at some ideas you can try yourself to make your large backyard more usable. As we’ve mentioned, different people will use their backyards in different ways. Find a solution that works for you and your family!
Add another outlet for recreation
If your family loves spending time outdoors playing sports and having fun, you can utilize your backyard space to add to that. Think about adding a pool (inground or above ground), playground or other recreational outlet. You can even add a game like badminton to your yard for an easy but enjoyable fix of fun! If you have young soccer players in your family, a pair of backyard sized goalie nets can provide hours of enjoyment.
Plant a garden
For homeowners who desire a little more peace and tranquility in their backyard space, a garden may be just what is needed. You can keep it simple and start with a few easy flowers, or go large scale and devote part of your yard to a vegetable garden or personal oasis. Add a water feature, such as a bird fountain, to the space as well as a bench or hammock for sitting and relaxing. Soon, you’ll look forward to retreating here after a long day. The sights and scents of a well-planned garden make it a go-to spot for relaxation!
Expand your entertaining space
If your house is the go-to place when it comes to family get-togethers, neighborhood events and holiday parties, you can probably benefit from some added entertaining space. Making your large backyard more apt for entertaining may be easier than you think! While you should start off with your patio or outdoor kitchen, don’t be afraid to expand into the yard itself by adding a freestanding pergola or other structure that sets aside entertaining space. Utilize stepping stones to make your grassy space more accessible for guests, and provide plenty of comfy seating so that everyone can gather around and enjoy their time together.
Spacious backyards are one of the best parts of a home—and knowing how to utilize your space can make it even more enjoyable!
